Chilean Ambassador to the World Trade Organization (WTO), Alejandro Jara, named WTO Deputy Director-General
On July 29, Director-General Designate Pascal Lamy appointed Chilean ambassador to the WTO, Alejandro Jara of Chile, as one of the four Deputy Directors-General. The other three officials are Valentine Rugwabiza of Rwanda, Harsha Singh of India, and Rufus Yerxa of the United States.
Ambassador Jara has been ambassador to the WTO since 2000. He has served in the Chilean Government as a career diplomat since 1976. During 2001 he served as Chairperson of the Committee on Trade and Environment of the WTO. In February 2002 he was elected as Chairman of the Special Session of the Council for Trade in Services, which is in charge of the negotiations mandated by Ministers in Doha.
